Bennett Beach
8276 Lake Shore Rd
Angola NY 14006
716-947-5660
Bennett Beach is probably the ultimate Florida like experience here in Western New
York. Also this sunflower of local beaches is secluded and pretty much unknown to the
vast public which even puts it above other in the terms of privacy and natural beauty.
Bennett Beach is a perfect destination for people seeking rest and relaxation; the
majesty and tranquility. Please bring lots of sunscreen and hats or summer umbrellas
as the beach is cooled off by Lake Erie winds. Most of the time the breeze makes is
very comfortable not realizing that actual temperature is much warmer.
The passage from the park side to the beach is also very unusual from other local
parks. The path will graciously take in somewhat rustic bridge you over the Big Sister
Creek. You feel face the largest sand dun in Erie County. You can choose to go around
it or through it by climbing to the top. The beach is around the corner – Bennett Beach
is definitely one of the largest and most beautiful in the area.
The park side has picnic tables and restroom facilities open to the public from 10 to 7
pm in the season. This part is somewhat not taken care off, yet this illusion hides the
true beauty of the park when crossing the mentioned above bridge.
You might spot here some wildflowers and pussy willows, maybe rabbits, deer and
squirrels, and looking above sometimes waterfowl, shorebirds, gulls, terns, herons,
ducks or even turkey vultures.
The Bennett Beach takes its name from Joseph Bennett, who arrived in western New
York with his family in 1820. He worked two summers in canal labor at Lockport, a lake
trader, but then Bennett traveled to Pennsylvania's Susquehanna Valley to begin a
three-year stint in canal construction. Bennett not only supervised men in
Pennsylvania, but specialized in the more dangerous aspects of the job, namely
blasting. Moving back to Evans with his wife Mary Roat in 1829, Bennett settled into
the life of husband, farmer, and construction contractor. By the mid-1830s, when the
last of the couple's five children had been born, Bennett had begun to take on greater
responsibility in his town, county, and state. He had been a founder of the First Baptist
Church of Evans (he would in fact serve as a lifelong deacon of that church), and would
soon be elected to his first of six terms as town supervisor - in 1852 serving as
chairman of the Erie County Board of Supervisors. Bennett for years held the post of
county coroner, served a term in the state legislature, and headed up the Erie County
Poor Board during the Civil War.
As Bennett moved into his twilight years, noting that the growing middle class of
Buffalo and beyond was coming to see Erie County's lake shore as a desirable
summering place, he gradually began to turn his farm into a summer resort, taking in
campers and boarders, and increasing the breadth of his facilities virtually until his
death. Guests traveled sometimes hundreds of miles to stay at the Bennett
Homestead in Evans. Bennett died on October 9, 1899. He is buried in the Forest
Avenue cemetery in Angola, New York. All vestiges of his home, farm, and resort
facilities have been erased from what is now Bennett Beach Park.
Wendt Beach
7676 Old Lake Shore Road
Derby NY 14047
Wendt Beach Park is a 170-acre lake front estate and was used as the Henry W.
Wendt, Jr. family's summer residence, which they later renamed the "The Ridgewood."
The grounds present a panorama of cropped lawns and colorful flower gardens with
occasional benches, and a picket fence. Structures reflect an earlier era of affluence: a
log cabin, once a playhouse and a guest house; a caretaker's cottage; a garage with
chauffeur's quarters; stables; now public restrooms; the pump house, where water
brought in from Lake Erie was stored in a large tank and pumped through pipes to
outside spigots for watering the gardens.
Wendt Beach is very well known in the area for it’s soccer complex. Lakeshore Soccer
League excites everybody during their season. Soccer fields stretch from the park to
Old Lake Shore Blvd. The park itself is very surrine and planned out. There is a natural
yet friendly bluff separating the beach from the park itself. You will find picnic tables,
grills and lots of room for gatherings. There is a basketball court. The restroom facilities
are open in season.
To enter the beach one must go through a little tunnel. The beach itself in contrast to
other s very narrow and pretty rocky. Nevethless it is unique and very friendly. The
lifeguard remains on duty throughout the season.
